Japanese civil war mod for Warband

Rising Sun: Bakumatsu Mod is a free-to-use mod developed by modder Helm8000. This custom content was created for the role-playing game (RPG) Mount & Blade: Warband. Experience the Bakumatsu era through the different sets and in-game factions custom-made for this game. Choose between oriental and western armor sets and weapons, reflecting the pivotal point from the end of the shogunate to the modern era.

In creating its East meets West aesthetic, Rising Sun: Bakumatsu Mod actually lifts content and ideas from two other mods. It is inspired by the Gekokujo Mod and rehashes content from the Blood & Iron Mod.

Relive the final years of the Shogunate

Rising Sun: Bakumatsu Mod focuses on the Bakumatsu era and the Boshin War periods of Japanese history. Running from 1867 to 1869, this focuses on the civil war between the side wanting to restore the Imperial Court and those looking to keep the last shogunate, the Tokugawa, in power. As such, it captures the unique aesthetic of that particular point in history.

As mentioned, it has a mix of traditional Japanese and Western armor sets and weapons. Not only do you get to experience all-new visual styles for your character and your men, but you also get to experiment with new stats, effects, and the strategic possibilities that come with it. There are also custom factions patterned after real clans and parties during the Bakumatsu and Boshin periods.

Unfortunately, the community and the mod seem to be dead. Longstanding bugs and issues, such as animation problems and compatibility issues, remain unresolved. The mod doesn’t support all versions of Warband, displaying error messages regarding being unable to open specific resource packs. Similarly, factions are exposed to a glitch where the morale of the troops rapidly drops, causing soldiers to leave.

A good concept

Rising Sun: Bakumatsu Mod is built on a good concept revolving around history. It has visually appealing in-game content such as armor sets, weapons, and NPCs that can help you relive the historical turning point. It still has a lot that needs work though. There are AI-related glitches as well as compatibility issues with the base game. If you’re not particularly into Bakumatsu, Gekokujou Mod is a better alternative.
